I grew up thinking violence was the measure of the man and that I shouldn’t feel any emotions associated with vulnerability or weakness. By 18 I was addicted to drugs, a high school drop-out, and about to spend the next 10 years and 10 months as an inmate in some of New Zealand’s toughest prisons. A big cause of this chaos was my lack of mental fitness.
Yet thanks to developing mental fitness I became the first person in New Zealand’s history to complete undergraduate and Masters degrees while in prison. I was also the first person to begin a Doctorate inside. My education and journey of personal exploration and growth gave me a profound understanding of the need to build mental fitness to successfully strive towards our potential, deal with the challenges of change, and build the mental toughness and resilience necessary to flourish through adversity.
I am now a Doctor of Psychology, motivational speaker, leadership and development specialist, husband, father and regular contributor to the media. I am also the bestselling author of How to Escape from Prison and Mental
